Case Study: "Our Role Models" by McDonalds & Toyota
"Our Role Models" honors outstanding Asians and Asian Americans, who have made an important difference in their community and beyond. For over 3 years, these 30-second spots aired nightly in primetime on LA18 KSCI-TV.
McDonalds and Toyota sought to raise their profile within the rapidly-growing Asian demographic of Southern California through a positive ethnic media campaign. Working with LA18, the largest Asian language station in the region, they wanted me to produce an on-going series of inspirational TV spots for broadcast.
The target audience embraced "Our Role Models," which became a very popular and successful television vignette series. This enabled McDonalds and Toyota to reach out to the Asian community in an affirming way and to build a positive brand identity within that ethnic market.
Project Approach
A. Through biographical research and community networking, identify outstanding individuals to feature as role models.
B. Conduct extensive interviews with subjects to learn their life story and accomplishments.
C. Based on my research and interviews, write a script, film, and edit a 30-second spot that captures the essence of the Role Model's character and contribution to the community.
D. Shoot B-roll and obtain footage to illustrate the Role Model's story.
E. Working with translators, add subtitles in Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese to tailor broadcasts to specific ethnic language audiences.
